Orthopedics

Cartilage and joint function improvement
In the area of joint injury and degeneration, mesenchymal (MSC) stem cells are being used to improve the function of joints. There are greater than 20 clinical studies or case studies in the peer reviewed scientific literature all demonstrating that stem cells may regenerate tissue, improve function, reduce pain and improve the quality of life for those suffering from orthopedic problems. 

Fracture repair

Stem cell therapies have shown to be highly successful in the treatment of bone fractures. One review reports injections of stem cells achieving 75% union over 14 weeks in one case, and 88% union over four months in another in patients with non-union bone fractures.

Treatment of Arthritis

Regenerative therapies utilize the anti-inflammatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells to alleviate inflammation-related osteoarthritis (OA) pain. In a 2011 study, for example, patients with severe OA were injected with mesenchymal stem cells and found they were able to walk longer without pain and climb a greater number of stairs after treatment. A follow-up study five years later showed that improvements had decreased, but that the knee that had received stem cell treatment was still better than at baseline. There are many other studies similar to this all supporting the notion that stem cells may be beneficial in treating arthritic conditions.

Treatment of Heart Disease 

Therapies for victims of cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke and congestive heart failure) now include stem cell therapies. Scientists have been able to culture MSCs to differentiate into cells resembling cardiacmyocytes, the tissues lost when cardiac tissues are deprived of oxygen. So stem cell treatment can actually rebuild and replace damaged heart muscle tissue. In addition, clinical studies in cardiovascular disease have shown promise. In a 2012 study on treatments for ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM), patients who received stem cell therapy reported increased functional capacity and improved quality of life. 

Treatment of Autoimmune Disorders

Stem cell therapy may be an excellent, minimally-invasive treatment option for patients with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other autoimmune diseases. MSCs may help drive the patient's immune system toward a more favorable TH1/TH2 balance, as well as increase the number of Treg cells.  This has been clearly documented in clinical studies on over 100 patients with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis receiving umbilical cord MSCs.
The treatments aim to strategically remove problematic immune cells, and restore functional immune cells to the body. In one clinical trial of lupus patients, patients treated with MSCs experienced stable disease remission for 12 to 18 months. In another case, a patient with autoimmune inner ear disease was treated with MSCs and recovered normal hearing in one ear and moderate hearing in the other.      

Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease

Research is finding that stem cells found in bone marrow can be differentiated into cells to treat Parkinson’s disease. With Parkinson’s, the brain produces less and less dopamine over time, and the person loses the ability to control body movements. Recently, treatments using bone-marrow MSCs to differentiate into dopamine secretory cells have shown encouraging results: almost half of the patients in a Parkinson’s treatment study showed steady improvement over 10-36 months.
